Organised by the 15th Airedale Scout Group, the Rombalds Stride Winter Challenge starts and finishes at 15th Airedale Scout Hut next to St. Oswald’s Junior School in Guiseley. The route takes in some of Yorkshire’s finest scenery, going up the Airedale Valley, over Rombalds Moor to Ilkley and across Otley Chevin.

The 23 mile route is to be completed within a 10 hour time limit. Checkpoints will close on a 2mph walking speed.

Etape du dales 8th June 2025

Brian G0RHI and Mike G7HEN are looking for operators for the Etape du dales on the 8th June 2025. Please let them know if you are available.

We have a new and exciting route for 2025, taking in a whole host of new climbs and challenges in the Yorkshire Dale National Park. The route will be 177km and have almost 3,600m of ascent, so very much in keeping with the previous challenging routes.

For those travelling from further afield to Horton-in-Ribblesdale (the start/finish location in The Yorkshire Dales), camping in the event field is available.
If you’re interested in helping and would like to know more, please contact  Mike or Brian

The Etape du Dales is a cyclosportive held each year, in the Yorkshire Dales in the UK. It was originally established as an alternative to the oversubscribed Fred Whitton Challenge; like the Fred Whitton, the Etape du Dales is a long day’s ride over steep hills, and the proceeds go to charity – the Dave Rayner fund.

It is ranked as one of the most popular and challenging sportives in the UK, covering 112 miles (180 km) with 11,500 feet (3,500 m) of climbing and is  considered one of the top ten rides in the UK.

Yorkshire Three Peaks Fell Race 2025 thank you

Hello 3 Peaks RAYNETeers,

Now that we’ve had a week to charge the batteries, pack the masts away, dry the tent and wax the boots (that’s all of us, not just me), I’m now taking the opportunity to say thank you.

I really do want to thank every one of you for the help you gave last weekend for the RAYNET radio cover of the 70th Anniversary Yorkshire Three Peaks Fell Race. Between us we covered a whole variety of different positions and roles, everyone of them contributed in some way to the job done as a whole so we could not have done the good job without each and every one of you – so thank you again.

I left the campsite around noon on the Sunday after the event, by that time the Race Chairman, Race Director and Chief Marshall had all been across to see me and asked that I pass their thanks onto you all too. Below is the email I received at the start of the week from the Race Chair.

The lead marshals debrief meeting is happening via Teams this week and I’m taking part in that so please feel free to pass to me any feedback on the RAYNET cover and the event itself.

Next year’s event is Saturday 25th April 2026 – hope to see you there.

Three Peaks Fell Race 26th April 2025

Keighley and Richmond RAYNET will be providing safety cover of the Three Peaks Fell Race on 26th April 2025.

Help Request for Yorkshire Three Peaks Fell Race – Saturday 26th April 2025
Each year Yorkshire RAYNET, in association with Keighley RAYNET, and many RAYNET volunteers from far and wide provide the safety radio communication for the Yorkshire Three Peaks Fell Race taking in the iconic peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, the original ‘Marathon with Mountains.’ 2025 is the 70th anniversary event, so in celebration this year sees the addition of a junior race and team relay to complement the 1000 strong field of runners in the main event. We normally operate with around 35 RAYNET volunteers across a variety of duties from fell topper, to valley checkpoint and a fleet of minibuses. To cover the additional few checkpoints and a fleet of 8 minibuses (normally 4) we could do with a handful of additional operators. For those travelling from further afield to Horton-in-Ribblesdale (the start/finish location in The Yorkshire Dales), camping in the event field is available

If you’re interested in helping and would like to know more, please contact mike.higlett@raynet-uk.net.

Three Peaks Fell Race 2025

The 70th Anniversary staging of the Yorkshire Three Peaks Fell Race takes place this year on Saturday 26th April from the usual Playing Fields in Horton in Ribblesdale. RAYNET have been asked to provide the usual safety radio cover and as a consequence we are seeking the large number of operators this event requires.
This year, being the 70th anniversary, we are looking for more operators than normal as the event has expanded in size as a celebration. In addition to the main fell race they have added a 3 leg pairs relay race (1 peak each leg, very much styled on the Hodgson Brothers’ Fell Relay) and a junior event. Unlike the last few years the main event is sold out this year (1000 runners) with an active waiting list. There are around 60 teams of 6 runners that have entered the relay and we anticipate around 150 young people taking part in the junior race.
This increased size is what has led to the need for more operators, not least the fact we have 6 minibuses this year rather than the usual 3 or 4. We have a variety of roles to fill, something to suit everyone:
  • Static mobile locations
  • Lowland on foot locations (some walk in, some drive in)
  • Mid level on foot locations (a bit of walk in, self sufficient)
  • Fell top locations (completely self sufficient, competent hill walker)
  • Minibus radio operators (now 70cm handheld duty)
  • 3 control operators (me + 2 to keep me calm :) )
  • Talkthrough operators
I know some people like to return to their favourite spot, others might like to try something new or you may be new to the event and have a location you’d like to try.
If you’re interested in helping please let me know along with the type of duty or favourite location you’d like to cover.
As with previous years, free camping is available on the event field both before and after the event. If you’d like to camp please let me know in your reply so we have an idea of numbers.
Could I please ask that group controllers forward this to their group members and other potentially interested RAYNET operators.
Many thanks.

Tony Westbrook, G7NKJ (1949-2024)

It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Tony died yesterday after a six year battle against Prostate Cancer.

Tony joined RAYNET on September 5th, 1992, and was one of our most trusted and reliable members. For many years he was Richmond Group’s Registrations Officer, only handing over to Martin G8XQS when he knew his illness was terminal.

During 32 years’ service he was nominated several times for senior roles at Richmond Group AGMs, but apart from a short period when he reluctantly agreed to be Deputy Controller, Tony preferred to play a supportive role.

He was a regular attender on our routine annual events such as the Lyke Wake Race, the Etape du Dales cycle sportif, the Long Distance Walkers’ Association Wensleydale Wedge and Blubberhouses 25 and Ripon Fireworks, but also travelled as far as Pontypool in the Welsh Valleys and Dunkeld in Scotland to give support on the LDWA 100 mile walks.
